Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons series is most closely associated with the Lake District and Norfolk, but the author himself did a good part of his apprenticeship in the capital. He arrived in London in 1901 when he was sixteen, taking a low-paying job as an editorial assistant at the failing Temple Bar Magazine and lodging on Chelsea’s King’s Road (on the top floor of a house with ‘desolate, curtainless windows’). He would later write a book about his time in the capital – Bohemia in London – where he talks fondly of his misspent youth, his strong desire to be part of a trend-setting underground and heady days and nights in Soho cafés.
THE MOORISH This is where Ransome went to listen to ‘strange Moorish melodies’, and watch men blow smoke through hubbly-bubbly pipes.
LITTLE PULTENEY STREET In the daytime, Ransome liked to walk along this road, eating bananas bought from a barrow, his heart throbbing to the music of an organ-grinder.
MONT BLANC ‘Irregulars,’ said Ransome, ‘of all sorts’ dined here. Among them were Joseph Conrad, G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc.
ROCHES/BEGUINOFS This ‘hot little inferno’ was ‘Bohemia’.
THE DIEPPE and THE PROVENCE Where Ransome enjoyed the pictures as much as the food, the latter featuring frescos on the walls of gnomes swilling beer and tumbling into vats.
