Pointing Beyond

Stein next suggested that substance is “the first direction whither immanence points beyond itself and whence it obliges us to set out.”17 I discover the idea of substance in my inwardness, but my consciousness itself is not substantial; strictly speaking, the word applies only to things that transcend, lie outside, my inwardness. The “me” category on the other hand, Stein said with Husserl, applies only to my world within, although I do speak of “me” as transcendent. The substance category, since I find it within but may properly attribute it only to what is without, is a kind of bridge leading from immanence to transcendence: “substance points into the transcendent sphere, and in the immanent sphere it has no place.”18

The idea of substance then gives me the idea of another sphere, outside the one wherein I dwell, beyond my world within, and I gain the idea of a transcendent sphere of things beyond my awareness, a world without. This first transcendent sphere of substances, the world without, heralds itself (ankündigen) in my innerness, and this heralding counts as evidence of the existence (Existenzbekundung) of these substances.
