Chapter Nine
âThere are two versions of the story?â Nora blinked in surprise.
âYeah.â Actually, more than two, according to his research.
âHow is it you know about them? How did you even come across the book at all?â
âBy accident.â At her inquiring gaze, Peter explained. âI learned about it because of a job.â He launched into the tale, because after all, why not?
It helped she listened raptly, and maybe it was time to remove some of the secrecy around it. After all, if he was going to die, someone should know the truth.
âI was actually playing it straight at the time. Working as a bartender at night, taking welding classes by day.â What he didnât add was that life sucked. It consisted of work, study, sleep.
âSounds like you were busy.â
âMy sister kept telling me it would be worth the effort. Nagged about the fact I was well past the age I should have smartened up and settled down.â It should be noted, he didnât have a problem living the criminal life. It was the cops and his sister that interfered with it.
âUgh. You too? I swear since my sisters all got married and pregnant thatâs all I hear. Christmas holidays. âWhen you gonna get engaged?â New Yearâs. âSingle again?ââ She grimaced.
âYou donât want a boyfriend?â
âAre you applying?â
âNo.â Although he was attracted to her. Problem being, he had no idea if it was reciprocated. It would really be easier if girls got boners so boys could tell.
âGood because I like being single. I never want to settle down. Diapers and dishes. Staying home and being blah.â She expressed his sentiments exactly.
âRight? Like I know some people love the whole âletâs stay home and raise a family togetherâ shit, but personally, Iâd rather run a fun con or smuggle in some crab.â
âYouâve smuggled shellfish?â She blinked at him.
âOnce. Those bastards are creepy at night.â Not to mention, he would have sworn heâd seen faces in the waves when the boat docked with its illegal load. Feminine with flowing hair and beckoning smiles.
âI see the file I read on you only listed some of your talents.â
Wait, sheâd read a file? âWhat else did it say?â
âWouldnât you like to know?â Her gaze dropped to a spot below his buckle, and he might have shifted, more to hide his growing erection.
Damn but the woman affected him. Every fucking time she walked into a room, his hormones ran wild.
âI thought you wanted to know about the two books I found.â
âPlease, tell me more.â She waved a hand, her graciousness giving him permission to speak.
âAn old friend approached me at work and said he knew of someone looking for a man with my skills for a job.â
âAnd you said yes.â
âYeah.â Despite knowing his sister would be pissed. âI couldnât resist. Going after the book wasnât just about the money.â
âBut also the adventure.â She nodded. âI get it. Why do you think I love my job?â
âWhat exactly is your job?â
âPretty much anything I want. Sometimes itâs espionage. Acquisition. A few on grand scales,â she boasted.
