CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Not Today
THE JELLYFISH CONGRATULATED the Leopard Sharks on their win.
âOkay, team, that score today was awesome!â Coach said. âWe all played our part and rallied. Good job!â She high-fived each Shark and gave Rosana an extra-firm slap. If Rosana could have, she wouldâve floated up to the clouds to let more sunshine in.
Lily smashed her cleats into the ground. The regrets started piling up. Her ball shouldâve scored. Her pass to Rosana shouldâve been steady. Theyâd scored the winning point, thanks to Ro, and she should be happy. But something didnât feel right at all. Somehow, this was all Gung Gungâs fault.
âHowever.â Coach held up her finger. All the Sharks stood at attention. âSince weâre still a little rough around the edges, weâll need one more practice before â¦â she prompted.
âThe Big Match!â Lilyâs teammates cheered and then slapped one anotherâs palms, but she kept her hands to herself.
âStay hydrated. See you at the practice. No scrimmage, just drills. Weâll work on our focus, too.â Coach raised her eyebrow at Lily.
Lily couldâve used the shark hat just then. To hide under.
âWeâre going for bubble tea to celebrate,â Rosana said. âBunch of us are going. See you there!â She ran to the bleachers before Lily could answer. She mustâve been too excited about her goal.
Someone bumped Lilyâs shoulder. A bump that could only belong to one annoyed and annoying keeper.
âSo much for your grampyâs hat,â Deb said.
âLeave my grandpa alone.â Lily squared her shoulders toward Deb.
âYou call that wobbly ball playing?â Deb said.
âBetter than letting points in!â Lily shouted.
âAs if you could do better!â
âMaybe I could! Your mom said Iâd make a better keeper than you.â
âWhat? You? No way.â Debâs confidence appeared to shrink.
âTime out!â Coach stood between them. âIf I didnât know any better, Iâd say two of my best players wanted to be cut from the team. One Shark down, and itâs total chaos! Donât get me started with two Sharks down.â
Deb folded her arms and glared at Lily.
Lily glared back.
âOkay, troops,â Coach said, pointing to the field. âThree laps around the field.â
âWhat?â Lily cried.
âMom!â Deb said.
âAnd ten push-ups,â Coach said. âGo! Move! Wait, Lil.â
Lily held back.
âWhat did I say about keeping things between us? Deb has her faults, but sheâs dedicated to the game. She doesnât need comments like that,â Coach said.
âSorry,â Lily groaned, feeling anything but sorry.
âI know thereâs a focused team player in here somewhere.â Coach patted Lilyâs head. âSheâs been on vacation lately. Yep, she must be in Hawaii or the Poconos.â
âThe what-a-whats?â Lily said.
Coach faced Lily, her hands on her shoulders. âIâd love it if she came home.â
As Deb circled around the track, she watched them talking, the scowl on her face getting deeper.
After they finished their laps and push-ups, Coach dismissed them with a wave of her hand, magic-wand-like, as if hoping to turn them back into soccer players. âGo forth and stay hydrated, Big Match-style.â
The bleachers were pretty much empty. Everyone must be at the bubble tea shop already.
And there was Gung Gung, sitting on his cushion.
