Chapter 58

Our flight gave us a chance to doze off a bit. When we got back to Lynn’s house, I called Marc and we agreed to go out for drinks later in the evening. I was happy that we could make a plan to meet since I had to leave early the next morning.

Marc enveloped me in a big hug when I opened the door. He had a brief conversation with Carl and Lynn before we left. We ended up at a small neighborhood bar that Marc liked. It was quiet, so we could talk. I immediately showed Marc pictures of Lucille Rose on my phone. He loved them and then asked what I thought about Sarah’s desire to move to Augusta.

“Nothing will happen for a while, I assure you.”

“How do you really feel about having that kind of responsibility?”

“I made it clear that she couldn’t move in with me. We talked about the need for her to have a plan.”

“You say that, but you know you’d be thrilled to have access to Sarah and the baby,” Marc teased.

“No question! I could have stolen that baby right out of the crib!”

He laughed. “Well, I’m glad you didn’t do that. Do you ever regret not having any children?”

“I’ll answer that if you will,” I challenged.

“My answer is that I have no regrets,” he stated firmly.

“I’m pretty sure that I feel the same way, which almost makes me feel guilty at times.”

“I know so many unhappily married men. I really feel for their kids.” Mark paused as if in deep thought and then shared, “I always say I’m too busy, but I think I’d like to help some of the fatherless boys that we see at the Boys and Girl’s Club. I’m on their board, which allows me to help in some ways. There are so many children in stressful family situations out there.”

“I’m glad to hear you say that you’d like to help, and I encourage you to do so. I feel that way about adoption. Why are so many children brought into this world with no place to go?”

We continued talking about a variety of serious issues that we had never discussed before. The more I heard from him, the more I was convinced that Marc was very happy with the way things were.

It was nearly midnight when Marc took me back to Lynn’s house. We shared a passionate embrace but were careful not to share how we felt about one another.

Lynn and Carl had retired for the evening when I entered the house. I felt that the holiday was complete now that I’d spent some time with Marc. I discovered that I really enjoyed having someone care about me. It made me feel special in a way I hadn’t experienced previously.

I slept later than expected. By the time I got to the kitchen, Carl had left for work and Lynn was on the computer while having her morning coffee. She closed her laptop and wanted a report on my date with Marc.
