I hung the last section of lights on the tree, stepping back to examine my work. I’d had to move Reese off tree duty and onto anything else because he had a way of just throwing decorations on with no sense of purpose. He had grumbled, called me ‘Nick the Dick’, but ultimately turned around and grabbed some sparkly garlands from the storage tub. I let some light illuminate from my fingers, pressing them against one of the unlit bulbs hanging from the tree. The light enveloped the dim bulb, making it shine brighter and brighter. I stepped back and watched my light travel from one section of the tree to another, until the entire thing was lit up. I looked behind me as Reese did the same thing with the lights he’d hung up around the big window that looked out into the backyard.

“See, Nick, I can decorate with the best of them.”

“I never said you couldn’t decorate, asshole. I was just concerned because last time you helped with the tree you made it very top heavy.”

Reese wiggled his eyebrows. “What’s wrong with being a little top heavy?”

I let out a cough. “Not what I meant, but just so you know the tree is not supposed to lean one way for the entire month.”

He mumbled something under his breath, taking the dining room table cover out of the plastic tub. I watched as he unfolded the blue velvet table runner. The gold tassels on the edges dangled around the table as he adjusted it. He clapped his hands together, stepping back. I crossed my arms over my chest, giving him a small smile. “Nice work for once.”

“For once?” He scoffed.

“I said what I said.” I answered, turning around, and heading towards the fireplace. I placed my hand over the dry wood that had been sitting since this morning. I felt my palm heat up, the wood starting to spark. I heard a small crackling and then smoke started to seep out from between my fingers. I could smell the wood burning from beneath my palm and on the count of three I moved my hand away as small flames began to appear licking at the wood. The fireplace lit up with light as I admired my handy work.

I heard the doorknob turn, Reese and I both turning to look as we waited. My father had his head down as he stepped inside, shaking his shoulders, and blowing out a breath. He looked up at us, his cheeks a little pink from the cold. His mustache had tiny flecks of snow on it, while his jacket was littered in the white substance. He looked around the room, examining all the work we’d put in.

“It looks good boys.”

Reese took a bow, gaining a chuckle from my father.

“And you both contributed to this?” He looked at me then for the truth. I nodded, silently answering. “Good. Oh, and you got the fire going. Perfect. It’s freezing out there.” He shrugged off his coat, hanging it over the back of the dining room chair and walked towards the fireplace.
