Chapter Five

“This place hasn’t changed a bit!” Max bounced as they entered Cob’s Bar and Grill, the local hangout in Willow Creek.

“Why change perfection, hmm?” Melody grasped his hand and led the way through a throng of people crowding the dining and bar area. A Johnny Cash tribute band played on a small stage, and she bobbed her head to a fast rendition of ‘Ring of Fire.’ A dozen-plus people shook and shimmied on the dance floor, and she longed to join them. When was the last time she’d cut loose and had fun?

“Bingo.” She snagged one of the few vacant tables left near the dance area. After shrugging off her purse and jacket, she draped the items over the back of her chair and sat. Music, chatter, and clanking utensils echoed around her. The scent of grilled hamburger and steak wafted from the table on her right. Yum. Her stomach growled, her appetite returning with a vengeance.

“Perhaps we should’ve gone somewhere else?” Max raised his voice as the lead singer jumped into another song. Then he cocked his head toward the good ole boys drinking and laughing at the bar. “Three of those men were ogling you as we came in. I’m in no mood to fight a drunken louse as I did the last time we were here together.”

“Watch your temper. If some guy pinches my butt, don’t slug him.”

A frown spread across his face. “Of course, I’ll slug him. Besides, that idiot from before didn’t just pinch you. He grabbed you, said some crude words I won’t repeat, and he laughed when you slapped him. If it happens again with some new guy, you bet your sweet hinny I’ll knock his lights out.”

She laughed, her cheeks burning. “Let’s try and behave, okay?”

“Hey, Mel. Long time no see.” Randa blew bubblegum from her red-painted lips, which matched the shade of her red hair. Her long legs stretched from her short skirt, and her V-neck blouse highlighted her already impressive cleavage. She handed out the menus, then grabbed a receipt pad and pen from her mid-waist apron. “Who’s your cute friend?”

Melody forced a tight smile. “Hi, Randa. This is—um—a friend from out of town.”

“Actually, I’m her ex-boyfriend who won’t take no for an answer.” He winked at Randa. “Soon enough, I’ll be her current and last boyfriend. The name’s Max.”

“Really?” The waitress turned to Melody and waggled her eyebrows. “You’ve held out on me, dearie. Why didn’t you tell anyone about your new stud? He’s... Wait. Max?” She scowled at the man in question. “Do you have a funny French-sounding last name, something about water or fountains?” She gasped before he could answer. “Oh God, I know who you are.”

And so would everyone else in the bar before the night was over.

Melody clutched her menu until the cardstock crinkled. “I’ll take a Long Island Iced Tea and Jack’s Combo Special with all the toppings.”

Randa scribbled on the pad. “People don’t forget juicy gossip, Max, no matter how many years fly by.
