The Evolution of Digital Photography

In a period of a little over 50 years, digital imaging has evolved from humble beginnings to a process used by billions of people around the globe. There are few technologies that have affected so many in such a short time span.

The first digital image was produced in 1957 by Russell Kirsch and his colleagues at the United States National Bureau of Standards. Kirsch and his team used a scanning apparatus to transform a picture of his son into the binary language of computers (Fig. 10.9). Unbeknownst to the group, their work would lay the groundwork for digital imagery used in a broad range of applications such as those mentioned previously.
