The article also described how Wise managed to take the business “by the heart instead of the purse strings.” A generous helping of photographs shows Wise in front of the Eiffel Tower on the recent Europe trip; Wise in front of headquarters; Wise reading to her son, chatting on the phone, and talking to dealers on the ’54 trip to Hawaii. While the article does mention the Tupperware line reaching close to one hundred “plastic houseware items including dishes, refrigerator storage containers, salt and pepper shakers, combs, even fly swatters,” there are no product photos. There is only one mention of Tupper, and it’s dismissive, as in the breakthrough Business Week cover story. “Brownie’s title indicates she isn’t the top rung on the company ladder, in reality Earl Tupper is the president,” the article states, “but, he has given Brownie free rein, and she runs the whole show.” Earl Tupper, now nearly invisible as far as the company’s high-profile publicity was concerned, dropped further into Wise’s long shadow.
What’s not clear is whether the Tupperware Home Parties’ new public relations department was feeding the press these stories, or whether it was Wise herself. “It was our idea to promote Brownie because she was so well thought of,” said Don Hinton. “The more we did for her, the more the gals thought of her.” And according to Jerry, Wise was not a big fan of the demands reporters and photographers put on her personal life, given the considerable demands of her career. But in a history of THP that Wise penned herself, the emphasis is clear: “On magazine stands across the nation appeared more recognition for the success of Tupperware, as shown through the success of Brownie Wise.” Even if the articles focused on her rise as THP’s charismatic female chief executive, Wise believed the company would benefit. The explosive expansion of Tupperware across America made that strategy hard to dispute.
