Malignant Narcissism: this form shares many of the same traits as classic narcissism. The difference is that malignant narcissists are mean and unethical, similar to psychopaths. However, unlike psychopaths, malignant narcissists have some feelings of remorse. There is little known about malignant narcissism, and it’s not recognized as a formal diagnosis.

Covert Narcissism: the covert narcissist is introverted and shy but quietly judgmental, passive-aggressive, highly sensitive and defensive, pessimistic, and believes he is superior but doesn’t directly say it. He engages in victimhood, he’s cold and distant, and exhibits self-absorbed aloofness. He’s envious, insecure, shameful, and unforgiving. Covert narcissists, also known as “vulnerable narcissists,” are at an increased risk for suicidal ideation and acts.[49] They are sometimes misdiagnosed with depression. It may look like depression (“I put myself out there so many times, but nobody appreciates my abilities and talents”), but it’s considered a subtle form of non-pathological narcissism, as there is no diagnosis for it.[50]
