Zeph

Unseen eyes are watching.

“What happened?”

“What do you mean, what happened?” Tyce looks at me, trying to play dumb.

“Don’t waste my time and yours. I can tell by your face that something’s gone down.” He looks everywhere but at me, suddenly engrossed in the ornate cornices that, like the rest of us, he’s mostly ignored every day since he started at St Joseph’s.

“Dude, unless you killed someone, how bad can it be? Just spit it out and tell me.”

“I didn’t kill anyone, although it did kind of feel like I might have died and gone to heaven at one point.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I’m not sure why, but something in his behavior and demeanor is grating on my nerves. I try not to let it show, though, biting back my irritation as much as I can. I don’t want to shut him down before he tells me what the deal is.

“I had a lookout experience with Blake.”

“You took her to the lookout like Zeph did?” I’m confused. Why the fuck would he do that?

“No, sorry. I mean we had a connection like what Zeph had with on the lookout.” I think I understand what he means. “We fucked again, and this time it was….” He’s trying to contain his excitement, but a grin is slowly creeping up his face, and he’s clearly pumped about whatever took place.

I eye him a little longer, just drinking him in. I’m pretty good at reading him regardless of what he says. “Oh yeah? Tell me.”

“Man, it was…. wild. I mean not wild, but epic. Wait... you’re not pissed?”

“Well, you haven’t told me anything to be pissed about yet, so why should I be?”

“Because I’m telling you that things are heating up between Blake and me.”

“And this is news because…? Obviously, all roads were leading there from the get-go. I knew you’d done the deed with her, and I wasn’t mad when I found out—” My mind wonders for a moment while I remember exactly what went down when I found out about his first time with Blake, and I try not to make it obvious that’s what I’m thinking about, although I can feel the color rising in my cheeks. “—so why would I be now? We’re free to bone whoever we like, regardless of what else is going on, remember?” I motion between the two of us with a jerk of my chin. “You know that.”

We’re sitting in the Abyss, and anyone could walk in at any moment, so I don’t want to elaborate further. I don’t need to, anyway; Tyce knows precisely what I’m talking about.

“Yeah, I do know that. It’s just that....” He looks at the ceiling again. Jeez, he must have a sudden interest in Victorian architecture or some shit. I might be imagining things and seeing what I want to see, but he seems a little wistful, or sad, or something. “...nothing. You’re right. I just know you like her too.”
