Chapter Nineteen

Crane checked his phone when he got back into his truck. As expected, there was a text message from Ricky waiting for him; in fact, the message had been waiting there for some time. It was the address for Sophie Davies. He had a good idea of where the address was in Caerphilly, but he still programmed it into the satnav to be sure.

While he was driving, he went over the description the boy had given him. The mystery man was about the same height as Crane, so around six-two, slim, slicked-back brown hair, and glasses. No accent, so he was presumably a local guy. The black suit and white shirt were exactly what the doormen in Corkers wore, but that could have been the intention.

Crane remembered seeing a tall, slim doorman in Corkers. He had switched places with Leon to cover the front desk when Leon had escorted him to the back office. That doorman almost fitted the description perfectly, apart from two features. He wasn’t wearing glasses when Crane had seen him, although that didn’t mean much, as he could wear contacts for work. Also, from what the boy had said about the glasses—“he spent most of the time looking over the top of them”—it sounded like the guy didn’t normally wear glasses; like maybe he was wearing them as somewhat of a disguise or decoy. But the part of the description that ruled him out was the slicked-back hair. The doorman he’d briefly seen had a shaved head, not quite to the scalp, but very short. Definitely too short to be slicked back.

Could the mystery man be another one of the doormen he hadn’t seen yet? Possibly. Could the mystery man purposely be dressing like the doormen in Corkers to keep pointing him in that direction? Also possible. Crane now had a decent description, but he still didn’t feel as if he was any further forward.

Less than fifteen minutes after setting off, the female voice on the satnav informed him that he’d reached his destination. The house was in a small cul-de-sac at the top end of Caerphilly, close to St Martin’s Church. The house itself was a neat three-bed semi with an adjoining garage. The front lawn looked as if it had recently been trimmed and a large concrete bird bath took pride of place in the centre. A six-year-old silver Nissan Pulsar was parked on the driveway, hopefully indicating that someone was home.

Crane parked on the road in front of the house and made his way down the slight decline of the driveway. The front door was white UPVC with a frosted glass panel on the top half. Next to the door was a small white doorbell. Crane pushed it and heard a faint ring coming from inside. Ten seconds later, a blurred shadow approached the frosted glass, followed by the sound of a key being turned inside the lock.

The door opened inwards and revealed a man wearing a friendly smile. He was short, around five-six.
