Chapter 14

Darek

Gulping down his juice, Darek thought about the mistakes he’d made the night before. Had he really punched a bouncer?

Fuck. I did.

He had also drunk more than he had in years, and even worse, he’d made a pass at Raven. Thankfully, she had turned him down. The sting of guilt had him going for his phone. He had to call Lizzy. Fuck that. He had to see her. After their blow up, he had to know that things were good between them, not just as lovers, but as partners too.

The phone rang about eight times before he gave up and tossed the phone on his couch as he approached it. He had left his shoes there before he’d gone to the kitchen, and now it was time to do his walk of shame and go to work. He only hoped that Lizzy would be willing to focus on the case and forgive and forget. He had been stupid to bring up Max messing with her, and with Bay telling him about the tail on the cop, he had to make sure he didn’t draw any more unnecessary attention to the man. At least until he had more proof.

On his way out the door, his phone rattled in his pocket against his keys. He pulled them both out and answered the phone as he locked up his house.

Hoping it was Lizzy, his shoulders slumped with disappointment as he saw Bay’s name. “Hey,” he said with a dull tone.

Bay’s laughter had his back up. “My, my, don’t we sound defeated?” he asked mockingly.

“If you’ve called to make me miserable, I already feel bad enough as it is. I’m sorry I showed up like that. It’s just where Raven and I used to go to unwind, and I guess nostalgia got the best of me.”

“I’d say it’s okay, but it’s not. You could have had the cops up at my place, and not the ones I pay to keep quiet.”

“Do you seriously pay cops off?” Darek asked. “And how come I don’t know about it?”

“There’s a lot about me you don’t know, Darek. But don’t worry, they aren’t from your department.”

Darek didn’t think they would be. “Right,” he said as he walked out to the car.

“I’m just calling to see if you survived the night or if you choked to death on your own vomit.”

Darek hated to think about puking. He had tried his damnedest to calm his stomach, but Bay’s melodic voice wasn’t doing him any favors. “Look, I’m trying to keep it together. I’m on my way to work.”

“After last night, you need to take the day off. You’ll be nursing that hangover for the rest of the day.”

“I can’t. Maybe if I hadn’t bailed on work yesterday.”

“You really are a mess,” Bay said. “Well, let this be a reminder to keep it cool. You’ve got me worried about you, and I don’t mean the type of worry that comes with caring. I mean the kind that’s going to land us in a cell together.
