CHAPTER 16

K en’s concerns for his mobile underwater research lab do not dissipate one bit after the ride back to shore. Small tremors are not completely uncommon in this area of course but he worries about his crew. The structure of the lab is quite secure to resist damage under normal water flow, including large schools of fish passing by. The jumping whales they encountered while bringing it back to the surface certainly confirmed its resistance to breakage.

An earthquake, however, is a much different matter. The lab sits on the floor of the ocean and rests there until moved. Acting somewhat like a submarine, it does have a motor to move along the ocean floor when necessary. Back in Houston, Ken is so uneasy about the situation after the team returns to land, he calls his chief engineer.

“Ken, trust me, there’s absolutely no need to worry. We haven’t felt a thing. If any tremors are occurring, they’re not affecting the lab,” Sam Hosenbeck assures the mastermind behind the technological wonder he created.

“You have no idea what a relief it is to hear.” Ken sighs deeply.

“I do know how much the first disaster affected you. Because of what happened to our brother engineers and scientists, there’s no way I’d ever take a chance. Any slight concern and I’m out of the lab with all the others. I will not take any risks whatsoever.” It is no secret that another disaster could completely destroy Ken’s experiment and no one wants that to ever happen.

“I’m overly cautious, I know. It’s important that you always have enough fuel so if you need to start the motor and move quickly, you can. It’s got a state-of-the-art engine and it can get you out of harm’s way within minutes,” Ken reminds his chief.

“We always make certain we check the fuel. It’s only been a week so we haven’t moved yet. We spent most of it getting to know our surroundings. We’re stationed in a fascinating area. The marine life is incredible.” Sam momentarily changes the subject. “I know we discussed this before when we decided where to place the lab but that algae is amazing.”

“The raspberry and indigo algae?” Ken vaguely remembers the conversation. Francis Pope, his chief scientist and the team had heard about divers discovering rare algae nearer to the California coast. When the invitation from authorities came to discover what effect fracking had on marine life in the area, the scientists became most eager to analyze the algae. The environmental engineers, headed up by Sam, are in alignment with Ken, who is focused on the fracking activity and almost forgot about the algae.

“Yes, it’s fascinating in its draw of different schools of fish. They’re drawn to it for some reason and we can’t wait to discover what it is. I sure hope the fracking doesn’t destroy it. Francis is over the moon about studying it.” Sam’s concerns are evident as he shares the chief scientist’s zeal.

“The fracking activity should be too far away to destroy it.
