Chapter 39

The others had long gone, and it was already dark outside, when Sam decided she’d done enough for the day and closed her laptop. Besides, she’d agreed to meet Patrick Casey at Thorney and Budge’s office at 9 am the next day which meant an early start.

She had worked through twenty-three of the organisations in Adam Davison’s portfolio. It was a good start, but if she was honest she had to admit that she didn’t feel like she’d got very far. She certainly wasn’t much closer to understanding the secret of his success.

Her thoughts went back to the ‘Diverts’ tab. She was sure there was a clue in there somewhere. She lifted her laptop screen and was about to enter her password when something told her not to.

This was stupid. She needed to stop work for the day and relax.

A thought occurred to her and she bashed out a message to Ollie and hit send before she could change her mind.

‘I’ve finished work for the evening. Still fancy the pub? xx’

There you go.

Pleased with herself, she waited for what seemed like ages, but was probably only a couple of minutes, and then his reply arrived.

‘Let you off early, has he? Lucky me!’

She stared at the screen, trying to work out whether this was more evidence of Ollie’s sense of humour or if there was some deeper meaning. In the end, she gave up on trying to decide and sent a simple two-word reply.

‘The pub?’

This time his response was immediate.

‘The Salamander - I’ll be waiting xx’

Sam smiled to see the two kisses were back.

She put her laptop in her bag and headed out, deciding that she’d go straight to the pub rather than home and change. After all, this was their third date and it was about time he saw her all stinky and smelly.

True to his word, he was at the bar when she walked into The Salamander. He turned and smiled as he handed her a glass of Prosecco.

“Thanks,” she said. “It’s been a long day. You’ll have to excuse what I’m wearing. I came straight from work.”

“You look beautiful,” he said as he bent down and kissed her lightly on the lips. He took her hand in his. “Come on, let’s find a table.”

He led the way to the same small table at the back of the pub that they had sat at a few days earlier.

“This seems familiar,” she said with a smile as they sat down.

She sipped her bubbly and wondered if she should ask why he’d suggested Luke was a problem boss. However, to her surprise it was Ollie who raised it first.

“I was only joking,” he said with a laugh, “when I suggested your boss might be a hard taskmaster.”

“I know,” she lied.

“I’ve been worrying that I offended you.”

“No, not at all.” She hesitated. “So, anyway, how’s your day been?”

“The usual regime. Training, study, lunch, training, study.”

“What are you studying?”

“Advanced midwifery.”

“Advanced…” She saw the smile on his face and jabbed his side. “What are you really studying?”

“I’m doing a Level 4 Diploma in Personal Training.
