Friendship Bonds

Molly passed the bottle of the half-finished Pinot Noir to Caroline so she could fill her glass.

Caroline watched the deep red liquor swirl at the bottom of her wine glass, slowly rising up to her desired quantity.

With her glass now filled, Caroline returned the bottle to the coffee table, leaning further on the couch’s arm. Her knees folded before her, and she had her laptop on. By her feet was Marmalade, licking herself after eating her tuna dinner.

In the last hour, Caroline had been looking into Kate Green while Molly got to know Chuck Herman better. If there is any truth to the saying “the devil is in the details,” maybe they could find where the locket went through the details of Kate and Chuck’s social media accounts.

Sipping her wine, Caroline spoke. “You know, I still think it’s not so bad to reach out to either Kate or Chuck—they’re at a fingertip’s touch.”

Molly chuckled, shaking her head as she sat cross-legged on the carpeted floor like she and Caroline were at a sleepover. “You’ve already heard Detective Freeman’s professional opinion. The last thing a bunch of Riverton thieves would want is someone from Riverton looking into one of their victim’s prized possessions.”

“Yeah, but that locket was given by Poppy to Kate; it wasn’t stolen.”

“And still, Kate stole more.”

“And got away with it.”

“Exactly,” Molly snapped her fingers, pointing to Caroline. “I’m sure they plan to keep it that way.”

Caroline sighed as she scrolled toward Kate’s first-ever photo on her account. “Then, she shouldn’t have named herself Kate Green so bluntly. She’s not trying hard enough not to get found.”

“Well, all she has to do is make sure Nathan and Poppy don’t find her.” Molly groaned as she stretched her back. “Tell me, did you find anything interesting?”

The date when Kate Green first made the account Caroline was looking at winked at her with a clue. “She started this account of hers two years ago.”

“So, roughly right around the time she took off from Riverton?”

“I would guess so.”

“Her oldest photos, was she wearing the locket in any of them?”

Taking Molly’s direction, Caroline resumed scrolling through Kate’s account, squinting for any hint of an Imperial Topaz. “I’m not seeing the locket here.”

“Same here,” Molly informed Caroline. There’s not even an inkling that Chuck ever knew Kate. There are no photos together, no tagged posts, and no locket.”

Just as Caroline arrived at the top of Kate’s account, she noticed a new post—uploaded three minutes ago. It was a photo of Kate chewing the straw of her piña colada as she sat at the bar of some other beach club. Her caption read: Reconnected?

Cryptic but completely meaningless to Caroline. It was just one of Kate’s one-liner captions, like all her other photos, and it was nothing elaborate or well thought out.

As Caroline opened her mouth to inform Molly of Kate’s new post, a message suddenly appeared at the bottom right corner of her screen.

Slightly startled, Caroline blinked at the chatbox a few times, wondering if she had gone borderline delusional while looking into the locket.
