Chapter 5

Two years earlier …

Two special agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration, DEA for short, sat in the office. They sat on the seats across the table in the office of the Chief of Police, Aaron Gonzalez of the California City Police Department. The special agents, Dalton Wright and Jesse Long had been on the trail of some narcotic substances. There was an ongoing investigation into the alleged trafficking of narcotic substances with the eyes of the federal agency in California.

Word had gone out that The Adventurer, a ship, was used to ferry some parcels which contained hard drugs. The vessel and her crew had come under scrutiny after the death in mysterious circumstances of eight dock workers, including the port manager. As a result, the DEA launched a probe. The Adventurer was found to have traveled to destinations of interest in recent voyages. Still, her manifests did not suggest any wrongdoing.

The DEA received an anonymous tip-off two days before discovering the eight bodies in a boat. Its agents stormed The Adventurer and searched the crew and some containers. They found nothing.

However, after the eight bodies were found, the DEA discovered some suspicious spending in cash by the wife of the port manager and decided to follow the money trail. The investigation led them to search for an old rickety vehicle abandoned by the late port manager in the mother's house. Officers found cash above two million dollars. The money, in one-hundred-dollar bills, was covered in transparent polythene bags with silicone and stashed in the empty gas tank of the vehicle.

The discovery shocked the deceased port manager's mother. She said she had never seen such money and that her late son had been the only person who usually entered the scrappy vehicle.

“He told me to let him have the scrap. I didn't need it, so I told him to have it. He was planning to remove it before they killed my boy,” the mother told the DEA agents.

“You suspect someone?” Special Agent Wright asked the older woman. She looked at him for close to a minute before nodding in the negative.

The agents evacuated the money and the scrapped vehicle. The following day, the DEA agents came to the house for further questioning only to find that the older woman had died. No one saw anything.

When the DEA left the place, they went to the late port manager's office. The place had been under lock since his mysterious death. Agents found a secret safe behind a wall mirror in the center of the bathroom attached to the office. The agents found two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash. They also found a small "I'm out" note. The handwriting was confirmed to be that of the late port manager. The date of the letter showed that the note was written just three days before his body was found.

The DEA concluded that the port manager was dirty, and the police had conveniently ignored the evidence that crimes were being committed. This brought the two Special DEA Agents to the office of Chief of Police Aaron Gonzalez.
