CHAPTER 17

When Gail finished reciting the plan, Roman was ready to go. “I’ll do it,” he said.

“No, you won’t,” his mom objected. “It’s too dangerous.”

“We live in friggin’ Fort Knox, Mom,” Roman said. “You said yourself that there are killers out there on the street. Are we just going to hide here in the house?”

Venice looked to Gail, who shook her head vigorously. “It’s what we have to do. What we have to try, anyway.”

“You said I’m part of the team, Mom. And I don’t see where anything can go wrong.”

“Oh, be careful with those words,” Gail warned. “There’s always something that can go wrong. And when it does, it will be at the worst possible moment.”

Roman laughed, but then saw that the others weren’t.

“Don’t get cocky,” Venice warned. Then, to Gail: “Are you sure there’s not another way?”

She answered with raised eyebrows.

Venice didn’t like it, but she settled herself with a sigh and pressed a speed-dial number on her phone. She put the phone on speaker.

On the third ring, the line clicked open. “Father Dom speaking.”

“Hi, Dom,” Venice said. “You’re on speaker with Gail and Roman in the room. Has Mama filled you in on today’s excitement?”

“You said Roman’s in the room?” Dom said. His tone showed equal parts surprise and hesitancy.

“It’s a long story,” Venice said, “but he knows pretty much everything. More than I’d like him to, but these are interesting times.”

“Mama gave me the overview,” he said. “Are you two all right?”

“We’re fine,” Venice said. “I need a favor.”

“Was Roman involved in the attacks?”

“Can we discuss the background later, Father?” Gail said. “We’re feeling some serious time pressure here.”

“Of course,” Dom said. “Tell me what you need.”

Venice explained, “We need you to have a serious talk with a RezHouse student named Mateo Lopez.”

“About what?”

“That’s entirely up to you,” she said. “Fifteen minutes should handle it.”

* * *

Roman was shocked by the fact that Father Dom had asked so few questions. The whole conversation lasted less than five minutes. It was almost as if Dom knew enough to know what he didn’t want to know.

“Tell me again what you need to do,” Venice said as she handed him a flash drive.

“I stick this into his USB drive and wait,” Roman said.

“How will you know that the program is loaded?”

“The light will change from red to green. It shouldn’t take more than a minute.” He turned the tiny drive over between his thumb and forefinger. “I’ve never seen a thumb drive like this.”

“Because the drives I make are not available on the open market,” Venice said. Roman heard uncharacteristic arrogance in his mom’s tone.

“And I don’t have to boot up his computer?” Roman asked. He started to work his way around to her side again. This time, she didn’t stop him.

“No, you don’t. If his laptop hasn’t gone to sleep yet, the program will load faster, but it will also load while the machine is sleeping.”

“I don’t get how you know how to do stuff like this,” Roman said.
