True, he’d lied to them about who I actually was, but a lot of good that had done. The local authorities were already well aware of my identity. They should be, considering how many times I’d been in to bug them about the investigation into Mandy’s disappearance.

The point was, Chaz had tried to give me some leeway.

But why?

If he really had no idea what happened to my sister, why bother to try and protect my identity?

Now I was more convinced than ever that he knew something, though I didn’t think he was directly involved. I didn’t believe for one minute that he would have involved the police if he were the one who was actually responsible for Mandy going missing.

The ride from the resort to police headquarters took almost thirty minutes. During that time, I tried not to think of what was waiting for me when I arrived. I’d heard tons of stories about how deplorable the conditions were in the Dominican jails, and I wasn’t exactly anxious to find out if the stories were true.

To my surprise, I wasn’t taken through processing and thrown into a filthy cell as soon as I arrived. Instead, they took me to a tiny interrogation room with a small table and two hard chairs.

The arresting officer shoved me into one of the chairs so hard, I nearly fell off the side. He then turned and left without a word.

A few minutes later another guy came through the door. This cop seemed to be a higher rank than the last one, though he was still in uniform. He was older than the guy who had brought me in, and maybe of mixed race. His complexion was lighter, which for some reason seemed to add to his worn appearance.

Sitting in the other chair, he looked at me with only slightly more interest than if he were seeing a misbehaved child. “Miss Johansson … I’m Corporal Rodriguez with the Dominican Republic National Police.”

He spoke English well enough, though his words carried a heavy accent.

I looked him in the eye, but offered no further acknowledgement.

When I said nothing, he pulled a digital recorder from his pocket and placed it on the table. After hitting the record button, he asked, “Is Aspen Johansson your true and correct name?”

I nodded.

“State your full name please,” he instructed.

“Aspen Raylynn Johansson.”

“And what is your age?”

“Twenty-two,” I responded.

“What were you doing at the Desire Resort?”

Growing weary of sitting in the same position, I tried to lean back in the chair, but the effort brought on a throbbing pain in my shoulders and upper arms. “I already told the other guy. I went there to find out what happened to my sister.”

“But you were not a paying guest, nor were you invited there by a paying guest?”

He was trying to get me to admit that I’d gone in uninvited, but I wasn’t going for it.

“I found my sister’s bracelet in there,” I blurted out, hoping to avoid the question.
