Chapter 13

Are You Really Doing It? Six Ways To Check Yourself

Exactly how can we work in that bodily way I have mentioned? How can we get that bodily change, something sensed concretely, a new energy coming forward?

I am worried that you might take it all into your mind only and miss the whole point. Sensing your body cannot be written down here, it is for you to do, livingly, inside. It takes only minutes, and it feels good and life-enhancing. It is more of you , when it comes, and not what I make up or write here.

Here are some ways you can check if you are really sensing in a bodily way.

1. FIRST CHECK: CAN YOU FEEL THE MIDDLE OF YOUR BODY?

Let me ask you to shift your attention to the inside of your stomach. Are you instantly there? Do you sense some fuzzy, woolly feel, or perhaps some tightness there?

Roughly two-thirds of people can instantly do that. About a third cannot. They can feel the periphery of their bodies, arms, legs, head, back, but not the middle inside.

We can now teach this to almost everyone who cannot do it at first.

Begin by finding one of your big toes without moving it. If you cannot find it, move it a little—there it is. Now stop moving it, and notice that you are now in your toe. That’s what it’s like. Think about something else, and then see if you can find your toe from inside, without moving it. Whether you can or not, go on:

Do the same with your knee. Can you find it? If not, flex slightly— there it is. Go on up to your groin, and then into your stomach. Are you there? Is it nice and woolly in there, or tight and heavy? Or how?

If this is hard for you, practice it during the day, between things, and very soon it will be easy. It needs to become easy in order to focus.

2. SECOND CHECK: CAN YOU SENSE THE UNCLEAR?

If you can sense what you don’t know, then you are focusing. You don’t know what it is, yet there it is. It has a life of its own. If you try to define it, it refuses and denies what you thought. If you keep your attention on a felt sense for some moments, it will do something. You needn’t. Just let it. Merely stay by it. If you lose it, come back to it. Keep it company. Ask it questions.

Does your felt sense have such a life of its own?

Most people don’t know about the felt sense yet. They may have had one at rare times. For example, sometimes one has a hunch that something is wrong even though nothing seems wrong. Logically some situation seems just fine and yet there is this odd and unclear sense. One tries to argue it away, but it has a life of its own, and stays. After it opens and releases, something important may then become clear. A hunch is a kind of felt sense.
