Les Paul and Mary Ford

One day, the NBC program director came to Les and told him he needed to fill 9 more radio time slots. Les immediately thought of the country act he used to do back in Saint Louis and Chicago as Rhubarb Red. He told the station manager that he could easily throw together a new version of the Rhubarb Red show. All he needed to make it great was a talented female singer. Gene Autry (jeen aw tree), a famous cowboy singer Les had worked with, suggested a woman named Colleen Summers. Les called Colleen the next day and invited her to try out for the part.

It turned out that Colleen was already a big fan of Les Paul, so she was happy to audition for a job with him. Les hired her, and quickly gave her a more “country” sounding name: Mary Lou. The new act went on the air as Rhubarb Red and the Ozark Apple Knockers, featuring Mary Lou. Les called Colleen “Mary” from then on.
