“How does he still have energy?” says Sam. “After I eat a big meal I’m always tired!”

“Look, we’ll just let him go,” I say. “He won’t bother us again.”

“Who won’t?”

Sam SCREAMS. So do I.

“Oh, hello, Ms Bottley,” I say.

Ms Bottley’s face is PALER than I’ve ever seen it as she eyes the WRITHING box, then the open door to her classroom.

“OK, so we have good news and bad news,” I say. “The good news is, Ratty has been contained. The bad news is––”

But I don’t get chance to finish my sentence because Ms Bottley has walked past us and looked inside. When she turns and stares at us, she’s gone so PALE, she looks like she’s made of tracing paper.

“What happened?” she whispers, her bonnet falling down over her eyes.

Jess shrugs. “Big rat, big mess.”

Ms Bottley runs a hand down her face. “You three are going to Mr Greenford’s office later.”

“Noooooo!” Sam screams.

“But first, you’re helping me tidy up this room.” She jogs up the bank and calls everyone back inside.

“But, Ms Bottley! What about the rat?” I ask.

“We’ll leave it in the box for now,” she says. “At least we know it can’t escape.”

When Amelia sees the room, her eyes bug out of her head. “Well, this is just wonderful,” she says. “First you ruin my gruel, then you ruin the classroom.”
