“We’ll keep north. Let’s go,” he said.

Mr. Wilson nodded. The other man got up and helped his wife up. Then he and Daddy helped Mr. Wilson to his feet.

Daddy and the man made eye contact, and the man nodded and said, “Byron.”

“Calvin,” Daddy replied. Then he pointed to each of us and said our names.

Byron was about to say his wife’s name when gunshots echoed in the morning air. They were so close I could feel the sound in my body.

“We can’t wait any longer,” said Daddy.

More bullets hit the fence, and we didn’t even take hands this time. We all ran with Daddy in the lead.

With bullets hitting the street only a few feet from us, we turned left and headed toward the rolling hills and woods. I hoped they would keep us alive.
