“Half of [the condors] are outside the zoological facilities, flying free in the wild, but they are still monitored and they’re still provided for,” he says. “They eat carrion and carcasses, and we have teams that put carcasses in locations where they can observe the birds. Now we’re at a point where there are enough condors out there that they’re able to reproduce on their own. It’s because we’re now aware of the challenges in their environment, the challenges that humans impose on them, and what we can do to help them maintain their population going forward. It’s not just, ‘Hey, we had a baby hatch,’ or ‘We’re creating an optimal condition in which these animals can mate and reproduce.’ That’s just the beginning of a very, very long tale and commitment to helping the species thrive in the wild.”
