Friday

Friday morning dawned with neither of them needing to get up. Dougie had brought her breakfast in bed.

‘Are there any restrictions on you travelling, Dougie? Do you have to stay here in case you need to be questioned again?’

‘I’m not sure. I’d probably have to let them know where I was going. What were you thinking? We can go to London to see your mum if you want.’

Bernie bit her lip. She knew her suggestion wasn’t going to go down well. ‘I was thinking we could go to Scotland.’

Dougie drank his tea. He didn’t look at her as he replied. ‘The snow’s hit them bad up there. It wouldn’t be wise to go.’

Bernie considered pushing the subject but knew it wasn’t worth it. ‘It was just a thought. And I have to see Dr Forbes tomorrow anyway to get my blood pressure checked.’

Her phone began to buzz on the bedside cabinet.

‘So much for being signed off. It’s Kerry.’ She answered the phone. ‘Hi, Kerry.’

‘Hi. I thought you might like to know that Keira’s well enough to be moved off ICU later today. The super’s thinking I should tell her family, after she’s settled on the new ward, that we know who’s responsible for the attack and we’ll be making an arrest very soon.’

‘I guess the super’s hoping they won’t find out her attacker has only been a few beds away from her.’

‘No. That would not look good. At least we can start putting the evidence together. What do you want me to do about Leigh? She was looking into this Dean Foster guy.’

‘Ah.’ Bernie wasn’t sure if she should tell Kerry or not. But it was pointless having Leigh look into an alias. ‘It looks as though Zac Ambrose was using two other names – Dean Collins and Dean Foster.’

‘OK. I’m not going to ask how you know that. But it means Leigh can stop trying to find him.’

‘Yes. We know where he is but it’ll be worth her while looking for evidence to link him to the other attacks. Lucy should be able to help with that. Find out if there were any dark clothes taken when the police raided Ambrose. There might be some of Keira’s DNA on them. And maybe some of the other victims too. I know Therese said there was nothing on Keira’s clothes but ask her to check again for Zac’s DNA. And what about the woman in Goddard Avenue? Did Leigh get anything useful from her?’

‘Yeah, she did. Some CCTV footage showing a man dealing drugs in the access road last Sunday night. You can’t tell if it’s Zac Ambrose though. As for the rest of it, I might need to talk to the super first. I don’t know how much access we’re going to get to Ambrose’s belongings. It’s a Met operation really.’

Bernie sighed. She really wanted to be back in MCIT and directing this all herself. But it was important Kerry played by the rules.

‘OK. Talk to the super and let me know how you go.
