Chapter Five

A Little Bird Told Me?

I hadn’t considered one very large problem when I’d decided to hand this case over to the professionals...

“Can I say,” Inspector Lean lived up to his name by leaning across the table towards me, “I am not wholly surprised to find us once again having a conversation, Ms. Dance. And not wholly surprised that you, once again, seem to be keeping details to yourself.”

“I don’t think that’s fair.” I held up a hand and shook my head, refusing to be bullied by this man—even though he wasn’t exactly bullying me. Just questioning me, but I didn’t like that either. “I’m here to give you information and that’s exactly what I’m doing—giving you information you otherwise wouldn’t have.”

“I told you you shouldn’t have contacted the coppers,” Petra insisted from where she was flashing around the inspector’s head, making angry faces at him and every now and then she’d stick her tongue out when she didn’t like something he said.

“Much appreciated,” nodded the inspector, but that eyebrow of his was still arched upwards as if to say—you aren’t helping as much as you think you are and, furthermore, I’m suspicious of you. “And the ‘information’ you are proffering…”

“The finger quotes really make it seem like you’re not taking me seriously.”

“How unfortunate.” He paused and when he spoke again, the finger quotes were missing. “The ‘information’ you are proffering is that young Hugo Williams has been kidnapped by a person or persons unknown.”

I nodded. “That’s correct.”

“You contend that he was ambushed while crossing Harper’s corn field on the morning of his disappearance?”

“You contend this and you contend that!” Petra went on and I did my best to ignore her. “I contend you should take all your contend questions and stick them right up your—”

“That’s what happened,” I interrupted my ghost as quickly as I could. Not that the inspector could hear her, of course, but I could, and that was all that mattered.

“And that Hugo was, from there, taken on to places unknown.” The other eyebrow lifted, so both were happily raised to the level of his forehead and doing a charade of: you, Gwen Dance, are full of shit. Or ‘shite’ as the Brits would say.

I frowned. “I don’t know where they took him or where he is now.”

“So, we’ve established all that,” Lean smiled in a fashion that in no way indicated happiness of any kind, “that is what constitutes your ‘information’.”

“You did it again—with the finger quotes.”

“Feels appropriate,” said the inspector, blandly. “Now, in my role as Inspector of Police—and a man tasked with ensuring that limited police time and resources (very limited thanks to our current government) are properly apportioned—before I send out all my men to comb the vicinity in endless detail, I feel I have to ask...”

“How do you contend to know this?” Petra interrupted.

“How do you know this?”

That was the problem I hadn’t counted on, and obviously should have. When one habitually sees the dead, then one does tend to forget
