Felix pulled down the shades of the front window as he closed Sacred Grounds the next night, but inside the shop was bustling with friends. Nick, Raylon, Dylan, Amy, Char, and I were crowded around a map of Los Angeles spread over the shop’s community table.

“There are two underground tunnels that cross the ley road. One was a subway system in the early 20th century, but the other was used in prohibition to ferry alcohol in from the coast and host clubs,” Raylon said, tracing his finger along two highlighted lines on the map. The ley road was traced in electric yellow, running through the middle of the old subway system to the very tip of the prohibition tunnel. “It’s more likely that if Jack and Liam are being kept in one of these it’s the former, since the prohibition tunnels are a tourist attraction now. But they could just as easily be in a basement of some kind.”

I made room for Felix at my side as he joined us after locking up. I was still angry with him and the others for the secrets, especially since they’d made it sound as if I wasn’t involved. Given that they’d been using my dreams to gauge the situation, that excuse had clearly been bullshit. But I’d heard sincere apologies from everyone throughout the day, and laid down the new firm boundary of ‘don’t keep shit from me.’ For now, the only concern that I really wanted to focus on was Liam’s and Jack’s disappearance.

“There are definitely a couple areas along the road that are less developed, but for the most part we’re looking at occupied properties. If I were planning on kidnapping and imprisoning our own kind, especially for as long as Margaret’s been missing, Los Angeles would not be my top choice,” Char said, arms crossed over her chest and lips pursed as she stared down at the map.

“They could be traveling the road,” Dylan said, gesturing south on the highlighter yellow road.

“If they were, we should have known,” Felix said frowning.

I was losing my track in the conversation, remembering that while my dreams had led us here, I was an outsider to this world no matter how much it tangled itself around me. I looked up from the table and found Nick watching me again. I raised my eyebrow in challenge, but he only delivered a half-hitched smile and turned his focus back down to the map.

In the kitchen my timer went off and I stepped back from the table, a half-dozen stares turning in my direction. “It’s just brownies,” I said, rounding the table. “But yes, they’re for you.”

Another contribution of mine. Baked goods and nightmares.

I pulled the brownies out of the oven and set them on the counter to cool as I started cleaning up the kitchen for the night. I needed a break from the others, and prep and clean-up in a kitchen were a practically meditative task for me. I wiped down my counters, reorganized my shelves and fridge, and gathered up the trash to take out back.
