“Thanks for that,” she says, not looking at me, taking another hit, “you’re a kind man.”

For an instant it crosses my mind to just sit there with her and take a hit and let my mind disappear for a while.

“You a kind man,” she repeats, speaking slowly, holding out the can to me. I look at her glazed eyes, which look at me but aren’t seeing me at all.

“Take it easy okay,” I say.

I walk away and then look back over my shoulder and watch for a moment as she rests her head back against the wall, the coke can still in her hand down by her side.

A kind man. Kind or stupid?

That all depends on how you view the world and your actions towards others who inhabit it, doesn’t it?
