Chapter Seventeen

“WHAT WAS THEIR relationship like?” David asked, his words stilted.

“She’s been obsessed with him all her life. Daisuke could do no wrong. So whenever he did something to upset her, she somehow made it out to be my fault. I hear he broke up with her before coming here. He texted me about it, but I didn’t put much stock into it. He’s dumped her like ten times in the past year.”

“Was this time any different?” I asked.

Shirou pressed his lips together tightly and stifled a sob. “Sounds like it. I only know what Mom told me the other day.”

Right, the fight with his family on David’s doorstep from a few days ago that the entire neighborhood had heard. “She sounds a little obsessed. I don’t think she’d have reacted well to him dumping her for good.” I mumbled, not even realizing I’d said it out loud. Shirou’s gasp clued me in. “I’m not saying she killed him, I have no proof. Just running scenarios through my head.”

Shirou covered his mouth with his hand, fresh tears falling down his cheeks. “The last time they broke up before now, I was still with David. Daisuke wanted to end things with her and come out. I didn’t believe he’d do it, so…”

“So you didn’t break up with me.”

It was hard, paying attention to what Shirou was telling us and keeping an eye on David. I decided David was a grown up, he could take care of himself. “Okay, so Daisuke went back to her when you wouldn’t leave David?”

Shirou nodded. “But he’d already told her he was in love with someone else. I think he might have told her he was bi.”

“Was he bisexual?” I asked.

He huffed out a weird laughter. “They maybe had sex once a month. Mostly oral. He said it was easy to get her off, then feign exhaustion. Or, if she went down on him, he could close his eyes and pretend it was me.”

“Classy,” I bit out.

“When he took her back, Nelly threatened him. She told Daisuke she’d kill him if he ever dared dump her again. We had a good laugh about it then. But now, I don’t know…”

“Did she mean it?” I asked.

Shirou narrowed his eyes at me. “At the time I thought Daisuke used her as a reason not to come out. He suddenly started spending more time with her once they’d made up. He said he was just making sure she never found out about us.”

“Are you telling us Nelly didn’t know it was you?” David asked.

“Daisuke never told her.”

Well, good on him. David had found out though, and someone as involved in her boyfriend’s life as Nelly… It just didn’t make sense she didn’t know. Or that she never even suspected it when Daisuke suddenly dumped her and went running after Shiro. Then there was her sudden social media disappearing act. I’d have to look a lot closer into Nelly’s life.

“You think she did it,” David said.

I held my hands up. “No, but I think she’s worth investigating.
