Checklist: Relational depth

•Relational depth is most likely to develop when counsellors have integrated person-centred values, qualities and attitudes into their way of being.

•Counsellors who are too anxious to achieve relational depth may inadvertently compromise the essentially non-directive nature of person-centred counselling.

•Working at relational depth with different self-configurations requires counsellors to respect and value all expressions of self and self-experience equally.

•Edge-of-awareness material emerges as clients experience empathic understanding and positive regard from a congruent counsellor in a relationship relatively free of threat to existing concepts of self.

•Person-centred counselling works within the client’s awareness and with the emerging awareness of the client.

•Idiosyncratic empathy refers to the non-formulaic, spontaneous and non-systematic nature of empathic responding that can occur when counsellors are deeply attuned to clients’ internal worlds and are open to their own flow of inner experiencing.
