Now that you understand how the alternate fingering works, here are the last 2 power chords for now, with only one chord diagram each.

You will see we are playing 3 strings. We are playing 2 notes. A 1st and a 5th, and another 1st, at an octave higher.

When playing on the 6th string, take note that you do not play the X notes here. If any of these strings ring, the chord won't sound very good.

The same is true of playing a power chord from the 5th string. Here, also ensure the 6th string doesn’t ring (many guitarists will overcome this problem by lightly touching the tip of their first finger against the sixth string, deadening it so it doesn't ring).

As for strumming, many guitarists prefer to use all down-strokes when strumming power chords. This results in a more "chunky" sound. This is not a rule, so experiment for yourself.

Now what else do you notice about the Chord Shapes?

They are the same chord shape. When played on the 6th or 5th strings, the shape of the chord remains the same. Also, notice that when played higher or lower on the fretboard, the shape remains the same.

So Power chords are a form of Barre chords, meaning that the shape remains constant, and we can move that shape up and down the fretboard, to play different power chords, in different keys.

Take a look at the diagrams and photos above and note, for instance, if we play the power chord on the 6th string, on the 2nd fret, we are playing F#5. If we play the 5th string power chord, on the 5th fret, we are playing A5.

Go back to the fretboard diagram and follow the strings and notes to ensure you understand this.

Also, re read the section about Barre Chords. And finally, compare the Power Chords’ chord shape diagrams above with the fretboard diagram, and ensure you understand how those chord shape diagrams relate to the frets and notes on those frets.

Power chords are generally used in pop, rock, and blues music.
