Provide the training needed.

For people to act differently, they’ll need training – both in terms of new technical skills and in social skills or attitudes. Bear in mind that many transformations will require your people to change their habits and work routines built up over their entire careers, so time will be required to allow for the adjustment. Make certain you find effective ways to deliver whatever training is required through worthwhile and appropriate educational experiences.

Align information systems and personnel systems.

In the early stages of a major transformation, there are often constraints on the amount of time, energy or money available. Thus, some of the organization’s existing internal systems tend to get adapted when in reality they should be completely replaced by new systems that reflect the vision. It’s important to seriously look at all the internal management information systems as soon as feasible. Whichever systems hinder rather than help employees to act out the new vision statement should be revamped thoroughly, or if necessary, discontinued altogether. Misaligned systems have the potential to disempower employees and seriously undermine the change effort.
