Chapter 14
Kaiser fought the pain medication to stay awake as Mal and Sasha dropped him on the bed and propped him up on his side so he wouldn't lay on the wounds. They should have healed quickly, but after being injured a week ago, nothing seemed to be working the way it needed to. He tried to find a comfortable position, leaning forward against a pile of pillows, but nothing worked. And then — the door opened and Josie stood there, and a weight lifted off his chest.
He'd feared she would run as soon as Owen wasn't there to convince her to stay. Even when she talked about fixing the elevator and bringing the kids to live there, part of him thought she said it just to placate him, to buy time so she could run. He lifted his head and prayed he didn't slur his words. "Are you okay?"
She shook her head, wordless, and his heart sank. Kaiser tried to sit up, tried to roll so he could face her, could convince her to stay, but pain ignited in a white blaze across his back and through his chest, and he fell back to the mattress. Damn those wolves.
But Josie moved closer, carrying a glass of water and a pill bottle, and frowned. "Stop moving around or you'll undo all the work Owen did."
Kaiser collapsed back against the mattress and watched her move around the bed to the other side, putting the water on the other bedside table. She wore pink pajama pants with hearts on them and one of his t-shirts, and his heart warmed. But she still hesitated, next to the bed, until he held out his hand. "Just sit with me until I fall asleep?"
Josie sighed and slid under the sheets, wiggling to her side until they were face-to-face, and bunched a pillow under her arm. Kaiser touched her cheek, restraining himself even though the bear wanted to drag her close, and murmured, "Why are you not okay?"
"This is a lot to take in," she said, and the tips of her fingers rested on his chest. "You're a bear. A werebear? Is it because of the moon that you change? How does it work?"
"Not a werebear," he said with a sigh, grateful she asked instead of just wondering. "We're shifters. There are a lot of shifters in the city, Josie, we just try very hard to remain invisible to the humans. It's too dangerous, otherwise. I can change my form when I want, but sometimes when I'm very angry, I'll shift automatically. Like when someone tries to hurt someone I love. The bears don't like that."
Her eyes widened and Kaiser almost took it back. A week was probably too soon to say he loved her. But it wasn't something he wanted to unsay. It was the whole, unvarnished truth. So he waited.
After a long silence, as he watched the emotions play across her expression, Josie traced a shape on his bare chest. "Owen said when your kind find the person they're supposed to be with, they just know.
