Derek was in the kitchen making an herb marinade for the chicken when someone knocked on Emily’s door. He glanced out the kitchen window as he started for the front door. A florist’s delivery van sat at the curb.

A young kid stood at the door, holding an enormous vase of white roses. “These are for Emily Larson.” He looked up from the card. “Can you sign?”

“Yeah, sure,” Derek mumbled. He took the clipboard and scribbled his name and then took the boxed crystal vase.

“Hey,” he said, stopping the kid. “How much does something like this cost?”

“I dunno. I just deliver. Probably a lot, though.”

It weighed close to ten pounds and the vase was eighteen inches of cut crystal. He set the arrangement on the kitchen table and then went back to the chicken. His eyes strayed to the roses.

It had to be Norman’s handiwork. That dick.

Unless Emily had more than one suitor?

As intimate as they’d been in the bedroom, Derek knew almost nothing about her past history or her professional life. He would like to think it was he who had awakened the sexual tiger in Emily, but there was a strong possibility she’d always been a wild girl, and other men knew it.

He put the chicken in a large plastic bag and poured in the marinade. In a half hour, he would grill the boneless breasts on Emily’s barbeque, and prepare the spinach salad they would be served on. Any longer in the marinade and the meat would begin to break down. Few people understood the delicacies of marinade. He didn’t need a recipe for this, but found himself distracted and clumsy.

He forced his eyes away from those damned flowers. With that fancy vase, the arrangement probably cost three hundred dollars.

He wondered if Emily truly appreciated the home cooked meals, or if she’d just been patronizing him when she’d asked him to cook. She didn’t have a lot of canned or frozen items, so he was sure she cooked for herself. She’d created a binder of recipes she’d printed from the Internet, mostly from shows she’d watched on public broadcasting and the Cooking Network, but they were easy recipes geared toward fast meals and simple cooking for one.

His eyes strayed to the flowers again. The card was on one of those plastic pitchforks, sticking out the side. Even across the kitchen he could see the flap wasn’t sealed, just tucked inside the envelope.

He washed the spinach in Emily’s salad spinner. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t stop looking at the flowers.

They had to be from Norman. Hell, the man knew she worked long days at the courthouse. He probably sent them here in the afternoon just to rile me up.

In that case, it was his right to read the note.

His stomach clenched as he crossed the kitchen and gently removed the card from the prongs.

Dear Emily, it was wonderful seeing you again today. Sigourney forgives you, and wants to see you Saturday night. Wear something sexy. Love, Thomas.
