Chapter Twelve
Leonid glanced at the womenâand Casper, he noticed, didnât; Beechâs gaze never wavered.
Mirim and Cecelia were staring, shocked.
âCasper, what the hellâ¦â Cecelia began, but Mirim shushed her.
Leonid took his cue from that.
âSo this is a scam?â he said. âYou planning to clean me out?â
âJust defending myself,â Casper replied, and his voice was calm, confident, commanding. âYou came out with a gun, you work in security, this place is the only place we might have gone thatâs not under surveillanceâI think that itâs a set-up. I think they should have been watching here, and they werenât because they wanted me here. I think that you got a call telling you that Iâm some kind of dangerous fugitive.â
âHey, you said you were a fugitive!â Leonid protested. âI shouldnât try to protect myself?â
âMaybe Iâm being a little over-cautious,â Casper conceded. âSo explain why you came out with a gun.â
âWell, I thought maybe you were holding the girls hostage,â Leonid bluffed. âI was going to get the drop on you, and ask them what was really going on, why the feds are after you.â
Casper smiled, a smile that Leonid really didnât like at all. âWho said it was the feds?â he countered.
Leonidâs mouth opened, then closed.
Ceceliaâs expression changed from angry confusion to outrage, and her gaze shifted from Casper to Leonid. Mirim took a step back, looking wary.
âYou said it was,â Leonid said. âYou told me the government was after you.â
âNo, I didnât,â Casper replied. âI was very careful about that. I did my best to make it sound like either organized crime or corporate espionage. You said yourself you were going to check on criminals.â
âYeah, butâ¦â Leonid stopped in mid-sentence. What more could he say? He was caught.
âSo the feds did call?â Casper asked. âDid they tell you why they want me dead?â
âNot really,â Leonid admitted. âSomething about you being a terrorist.â
âYou believe that?â
âNo.â
âBut you were going to kill me anyway?â
Leonid shrugged. âThe feds asked me to. Iâm going to argue with them?â
âWho was it called? FBI?â
Leonid shook his head.
Beech waited, but Leonid didnât answer further.
âYou probably know I donât want to kill you,â Casper said. âNot only do I not want to kill anybody, you can still be useful to me, and you know it. I wouldnât mind shooting you in the leg, though, and do you really want me to do that? Iâd try to break the bone if I did, and that could be messy.â
âCovert Operations Group,â Leonid said.
Casper gestured at the women with the hand that wasnât holding the Browning.
âI never heard of them,â Mirim said.
âI have,â Cecelia said. âWhen they eliminated all those conflicting agencies at the beginning of the century, after they set up Homeland Security, they put all the above-ground ones in the FBI, and all the secret ones in Covert.â She frowned. âBut I thought they were like the old CIA, not supposed to operate in the U.S. in peacetime.â
âThey make exceptions,â Leonid said.
âSo thatâs whoâs after me?â Beech asked.
Leonid nodded.
âWhy?â
âI donât know.
