King took the country roads with abandon. The Land Rover wasn’t the best vehicle at handling the bends, but in the right gear he could use the engine’s torque to maintain speeds of forty to sixty miles per hour, scraping the hedges and ploughing through the gaps left by terrified oncoming drivers. Most of the time he used third gear and the high revs gave him good engine braking as well. By the time he reached the cliff road, the vehicle was smelling hot and the brakes were starting to fade.

King slammed the vehicle to a halt on the side of the road and studied the property. He could see a black SUV parked between the two cottages. The other cottage was under refurbishment, their plan was to let the place for an extra income, but he couldn’t imagine a day when he would allow normality and the outside world to come so close to them again. He reached under his seat and retrieved a pair of binoculars and took a closer look. He could not see the police officer who had been standing guard. King continued to watch, and saw a man skirting the cottage carrying a weapon. He adjusted the magnification, losing the wide angle he preferred, and identified the weapon as a silenced pistol. There could be no mistaking the crime underworld or hostile intelligence services connotations of such a weapon. He took out his mobile phone and went through the camera footage. In the last action, he could see his own vehicle from the camera he had mounted to cover the entrance to the property. He used the scroll function, saw the vehicle – a black Range Rover – drive slowly up the lane. The young police officer approached the vehicle, then stood back with his hands raised above his head. A man stepped out of the Range Rover, a pistol in his hand aiming at the young officer. Another man got out and walked around the vehicle. Between them, they marched the police officer towards the cottage. King cursed, knowing he now had a hostage situation to contend with. He scrolled on through the film, changed the cameras and saw a blue saloon parked in the same place he was. He watched, saw Cole and his stomach tightened. He scrolled on, Cole went out of frame, returned ten minutes later. The timer showed him turning and driving away. He took a screenshot of the best image and sent it to Neil Ramsay with a short text. If anyone could get a clear image of the numberplate it was him.

King checked the .45. He had only just checked the Walther, which he slipped into his back pocket. The .38 revolver was in the door pocket, but he removed it and put it in his jacket’s inside pocket, because he had plans for the Land Rover and leaving the weapon in it was pointless. Besides, you could never have enough weapons or ammunition in a gun battle. He drove slowly onwards, then stopped short of the entrance and got out.
