CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Grant came in, pushing a large, horizontal glass case with wheels. “You said you wanted to see a side of me people don’t see.” He opened the case.

Swords of various shapes and sizes hung from hooks.

“I collect swords.” He beamed. “It’s a secret obsession.”

“Swords?”

“I’ve been into them since I was a kid, and I’ve been fencing since I was twelve.” He ran his hands across the gold and silver handles. “You like them?”

“Uh—”

“I have Viking swords and Celtic swords.” He pointed to a regal-looking one. “This is a European Saber.”

Swords? This is too much.

“What do you do with them? Just look at them?”

“No, I like to play with them.”

“Play?”

“Ever used a sword, Alexis?”

“Hell no.”

“It’s fun.” He retrieved two sharp-pointed swords with basket hilts for handles. “These are rapier swords. Can do a lot of damage in the wrong hands. You curious?”

“You should keep them in the cabinet so no one gets hurt.”

“I’m a pro, and I can teach you to be one too.” He turned one around where the handle faced her and tossed it at her.

“Ah.” She jumped as it fell to her feet. “Grant.” She gasped.

“Pick it up.” He shoved the case across the room. “I said pick it up.” He pointed his sword at her with a stern expression.

Sweat trickled down her nose.

“You’re sweating.” He got in position as if ready to joust. “Pick it up.”

“What is this?”

“Don’t be afraid. I’m trying to teach you how to use a sword.”

“I don’t want to—”

“Pick it up.” He lunged at her.

She yanked up the sword, surprised at how light it was.

“There you go.”

“Grant...” Her hands shook, the sword pointing downward.

“How are you gonna do damage with it pointing down?” He hit hers with the tip of his. “Get it up.” He tapped it harder. “Get it up.”

She lifted it. “Why are we doing this?”

An eerie look came into his eye. “Because it’s fun.” He lunged at her. “Isn’t this what you wanted?”

She screamed, waving the sword in an awkward manner.

“You got to do better than that, Alexis.” He waved his like a master, holding his waist with his free hand. “This is a battle, right? You’ve been challenging me.”

“I haven’t.” She backed up, moving the sword toward him but only catching air. “I want to go home.”

“You can go home.” He watched her as if she were a deer and he the hunter. “After we’re done here.” He thrust the sword at her and she blocked his movements. “Good! That’s good.”

“Grant, please.”

“Please what?”

She backed into the wall.

“Better get away from that wall before you get trapped.” He swung his blade toward her.

“Oh!” Alexis ducked out the way. “Stop it!”

“Stop what? Huh?” He panted. “When I first asked you out, I said I wanted us to duel.” He plunged his sword at her.

“Ah!” She whacked the point away with hers.

“That’s good.”

She huffed and puffed. “When you said duel I didn’t think you meant literally.”

He swayed the sword left and right.

Alexis shrieked, blocking his sword from penetrating. “Okay, I get it! I get the point.
