Luke’s handsome face swam in and out of her vision. If he would just be still. And why didn’t he talk louder?

“Delaney, look at me! Can you get up? I don’t think I can carry you.”

His words slowly gained meaning. Why would he want to carry her? She attempted to sit and found that the rest of the world was moving as fast as Luke’s face.

“Come on, we need to get out of this rain. Put your arm around my neck. Do you understand me?”

Obediently her arms encircled his neck and he hauled her to her feet.

“One foot in front of the other, girl. You can do it.” He shouted over the thunder for her to hear him.

Slowly they made their way to a nearby rock overhang. Delaney took small steps, and trembled every time it thundered. Luke pulled her along with him, only stopping to pick up their hats and cover their heads with them. Not much use since they were already wet.

He put his hand on top of her head and forced her to bend down as they scooted under the low jutting rocks. About four foot high underneath, it made a small, dark cave. The dry, dusty dirt on the floor clung to their wet clothes and hands, making a muddy mess.

At the back, they sat and leaned against the hard rock wall. A gust of wind made its way inside, bringing a sprinkling of rain with it. Sunny refused to follow them. His barking rang loudly in the small space and echoed off of the curving back wall.

“Let me look at your head.” Luke’s fingers gently probed her neck, traveling around her ears and across her scalp. “I don’t feel any bumps. How are you feeling? Do you have a headache?”

She nodded and rubbed her temples with her fingers, feeling where his touch had just been. “Not bad, though. I think my head’s starting to clear a little. Guess I got the wind knocked out of me out there.”

He grinned. “You and me both. For a few minutes I thought we were gonna roll on down the hillside. Or be trampled by those two mule-headed animals. No offense to Pearl.”

“What about you? Did you injure your shoulder again?”

“I’m okay. Or I will be when we can get dry.”

“We have to find the animals,” she added. “It’s a long walk home from here.” She was too tired and cold to walk anywhere, right now. She shivered and jumped as a loud crackling sound filled the air.

Luke put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to him. “It’s okay. Just lightning striking something. The storm will be over soon and we’ll find our rides. You need to rest until it calms down out there. Just close your eyes.”

For an instant she began to pull away. But she was cold and exhausted. And it was so sweet the way he had checked her head, making sure she was okay. She could still feel the warm, tingling trails of his fingertips across her head.
