Veer right at the junction and follow the trail well above the north shore of Rainbow Lake, along the base of Fairfield Peak, the 7,162-foot cinder cone directly northwest, until the path drops alongside the shoreline. The straightforward, 650-foot optional climb to the summit of Fairfield Peak begins from the west corner of the lake, near a fairly large campsite nestled beneath the trees, and heads cross-country north-northwest to the top. Additional campsites may be available on the east side, accessible from a use trail. The lake offers decent swimming, at least until the customary wind whips up, usually in mid-afternoon.
