NAVIGATING BY THE STARS
Just as it is important to learn the observed path of the sun and moon, it is important to become familiar with the stars. It turns out the night sky holds many clues to cardinal directions.
UNDERSTANDING THE NIGHT SKY
First, go outside on a clear night and observe the stars. You may or may not know the constellations, or be able to recognize them. That’s okay for now. Just observe what you see, and attempt to take note of various patterns or shapes.
The North Star is useful for navigation. To find it, locate the Big Dipper, known by most people, and look to the right of the “cup.”
