“Davis?”

The voice was both familiar and tinged with concern. Jayden opened his eyes, the final commitment to returning to consciousness. Sergeant Withers, blood running out of his nose, looked at him with a serious expression.

“There you are. Can you get up?”

Jayden had no idea. He tried to remember what led to him being in this position in the first place. He was either numb or uninjured, because he couldn’t feel any pain. He decided to give a good, military answer. “Yes, Staff Sergeant. Can you give me a hand?” Wither’s arm extended, strong fingers curling around his own.

“Here we go,” Withers said as he pulled.

Jayden concentrated for the initial moments of being upright on not losing his balance and falling back down again.

“You feel all right?”

Jayden nodded. “Yes sir.” He started to look around. “Oh my God.” The site was chaos. Even the Howitzer was on its side. Far worse, all the other men lay on the ground, unmoving. “What about the others?”

Withers frowned. “You’re the only one I’ve been able to revive, so far.”

Jayden didn’t know that at least three of them didn’t have a pulse. He would get that bad news soon enough. Still woozy, he found his thoughts disjointed. “What happened, sir?”

“We were attacked, remember?”

“Attacked?” His mind began to clear.

“Yeah,” Withers said. He turned, looking out over the Bay. “By that.”

Jayden followed his gaze. Now his memory jolted back in focus. The monster, gargantuan and black, was approaching the Golden Gate Bridge. It was both easier to see, and harder to tolerate. “God. Now I remember.”

Withers put his hands on his hips, glaring.

“Staff Sergeant, where are the planes? Why aren’t we fighting back?”

“That thing has an attack that seems to be as broad as the horizon. I think it knocked them all out of the air.”

As if on cue, the monster stopped, firing at the bridge. The shimmering wave was visible, narrow and focused. It didn’t appear to be aimed in their direction, for which Jayden was thankful. But in that moment, he felt fear and concern for the bridge and those on it.

It struck with catastrophic consequences. A cloud of metal, wire and concrete flew into the air. The wave appeared to have sliced through the structure with ease. Jayden was sure he saw at least one car tumble through the new opening, falling with great speed into the water below.

“Damn, Staff Sergeant! We’ve got to do something.”

Withers remained impassive. “I’m sure reinforcements are on the way, Davis. But as for us, except for small arms, we’ve got nothing to fight back with. The big gun is trashed. I don’t think a rifle is going to cut it.”

“But that thing is going to destroy the bridge. There must be hundreds of people on there.”

Withers figured it was more like thousands. “I know. Davis, if you’ve got any bright ideas, I’d love to hear them.”

From their position, they could see the monster turning to line up for its next shot.

“SAM’s, Staff Sergeant. There are some missiles stored under the control console.
