Languaging in collaborative writing

Languaging in L2 collaborative writing research has been commonly investigated through the examination of language-related episodes (LREs), which refer to “any part of a dialogue where students talk about the language they are producing, question their language use, or correct themselves or others” (Swain & Lapkin, 1998: 326). For instance, Swain and Lapkin (1998) investigated the peer-peer interaction of French immersion students when collaborating on a jigsaw task and found that the students produced mainly lexis-focused and form-focused LREs. Other studies (e.g., Kim & McDonough, 2008; Leeser, 2004) reported similar findings in relation to students’ attention to lexical and grammatical issues in face-to-face collaborative dictogloss tasks. Similar findings were reported in studies on collaborative writing in the computer-mediated environment (e.g., Kessler, 2009; Li & Zhu, 2013; Zeng & Takatsuka, 2009). For example, Zeng and Takatsuka (2009) examined EFL learners’ text-based dialogues in synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) environment (i.e., Moodle), and found that online learners scaffolded each other in language negotiation through collaborative dialogues, reflected in form-based LREs and lexis-based LREs.
