One day in August, when Langston’s father came home, he suddenly came to realize that Langston felt sad and lonely. “Ten days from now I’m going to Mexico City on business,” he said. “How would you like to go along? Then you can see the summer bullfights and Xochimilco.”

At first Langston was too surprised to answer. He had been in Mexico all summer and this was the first time that his father had offered to take him anywhere. Finally he managed to thank his father and to say that he would be delighted to go along. Moments later he hurried out to He on the grass and to dream about the wonderful holiday he would have in Mexico City and the interesting sights he would see.

During the coming ten days Langston’s father gave Langston a rough time in bookkeeping. Each day he gave him pages and pages of figures. Then he ordered, “Hurry up and get those figures done so I can check them. Hurry up.” In addition he decided to teach Langston how to use the typewriter. Each evening after supper he gave him several exercises to type and ordered, “Now type those exercises a hundred times before you go to bed.”

At last the day came for Langston and his father to leave for Mexico City. His father awakened him at 4:30 o’clock in the morning. “Hurry up and get dressed,” he said.

Langston crawled out of bed, but somehow he didn’t feel right. He managed to dress and reach the breakfast table, but was too sick to eat. All the while his father gulped his food down and shouted, “Hurry up!”

Suddenly Langston felt as if his stomach would turn inside out. His body shook and he broke out in a deep sweat. Everything around him seemed to be swirling round and round. Finally he got up and staggered back to bed.

Langston’s father could readily see that he was seriously ill. He called a doctor who said that Langston should be taken to a hospital. Then he put Langston on a train and took him to a hospital in Mexico City. There Langston stayed in the hospital for nearly three weeks, recovering from his illness.

Early in September Langston climbed on a train to return to Cleveland. He had spent a full summer in Mexico with his father without seeing either a bullfight or Xochimilco. Now he fully understood why his mother had objected so strenuously to his coming here.
