“We don’t have time,” said the woman who called herself Alex. “We must hurry. But first, money. You pay ten thousand euro now, five thousand when job is done, yes?”

I swung the door shut with a heavy thud, still gripping the pistol by my side.

Alex sauntered a few steps into the center of the room, placed her hands on her hips, and looked around as if she were an appraiser, contemplating whether the small, shifty space was suitable or not. I, in turn, examined her.

She wore close-fitting black jeans and heavy leather boots. Her black T-shirt was exceptionally tight, stretching the fabric over the contours of her breasts, but failing to cover a thin line of skin just above her waistline. Her small leather jacket was also black, and it displayed the scars of being worn daily, regardless of winter or summer.

Her face, however, captivated me the most. She had brunette hair but must have dyed it with a deep maroon to give the suggestion of color in the right light. She wore it neck-length and a little tousled, which framed her round face and high cheekbones. Her deep blue eyes were like intense orbs, and she’d used plenty of makeup to create a dark, smoky shade to contrast with her burgundy lips.

She stood with confidence, even a bit surly. The combination would have put anyone off balance, even other women.

“Are you deaf?” the woman asked, tapping her ear. “You hear me? Ten thousand now, then we go.”

“Who are you?” I asked.

She flashed me a mocking smile. “Stanislav. He call you, yes?”

I nodded.

“You need help, yes? Need to get to Mauripol′, yes?”

I nodded again, incurring a flashy smile and a twinkle in the woman’s eye.

“Well, I here to help. But money first.”

“How did you find me?” I asked. She’d already established her bona fides—she’d obviously talked to Stanislav—but her sudden appearance, having just hung up with Stanislav, gave me pause.

Alex rolled her eyes. “You give Stanislav name of hotel, but you not stay there. You tell him you stay across the street. Smart. But you still smell like American. You not fit—” the woman tossed her eyes around the room again—“you not fit in this place.”

I exhaled, assuming Stanislav must have sent her to the hotel written on the piece of paper I’d given him before he called me. She then found the misplaced foreigner—me—and had probably been standing outside the door listening to our conversation.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“I tell you. Is Alex.”

“Yeah, I heard you. Alex what?”

The woman shook her head, puckering her lips. “No. We stick with Alex, just like you stick with Mason. Good for me and good for you. Now—”

“Not so fast. I get it, Stanislav sent you. I know him but I don’t know you, and I’ve already been screwed on this little adventure. I need you to tell me who you are and why he called you after he told me he wanted nothing to do with this.”

Her mocking smirk returned, but her
