Chapter Thirteen

Karine hadn’t known what to expect when she’d searched her mother’s studio, but she certainly hadn’t expected to find evidence that her mother had been having an affair. This must be what the note in the police report about “affair” had meant. Her mother had been having an affair. Who was her lover? And how long had it gone on? Had Marilee still been involved with the man when she died? Could her lover be her killer?

She flipped through the diary, reading as fast as she could, looking for the name of her mother’s lover. There was nothing to even suggest whom Marilee may have had an affair with. Mostly, the diary detailed Marilee’s hopes for her artist career. There were some references to Karine, and one or two about her father, but the diary was pretty benign. Boring even.

The question swirled in her head. Omar had warned her that she’d probably have to talk to her father, get him to open up, if she really hoped to find answers about her mother’s death, and it seemed he was right.

She had to tell her father about the affair.

Six months ago she would have said that her father was going to be devastated by the news, but now, with her memories so jumbled, leaving her unsure of what parts of her childhood were real and what parts she’d glossed over, she wasn’t so sure. Regardless of how her father reacted, he deserved to know the truth about his marriage, and she wouldn’t have felt right keeping such a big secret from him.

Karine left the mousetraps in the attic and took a second shower. While she got dressed in jeans and a light sweater, she took the time to consider, then reject, the idea of asking Omar to drive with her to Connecticut.

It wasn’t that she wouldn’t have liked the company. She was finding that she more than liked being in the company of Omar, a feeling she was starting to believe she’d have to give some serious thought to at some point. But not now. She was about to spring some potentially upsetting news on her father, and she didn’t want it to be any more uncomfortable than it had to be.

She shot Omar a quick text, telling him she was going to visit her father and would be back that evening, before leaving for Springtree. The bright sunny day was a contrast with the heavy feeling sitting in the pit of her stomach as she made the drive.

The afternoon traffic was light, and she made it to her father’s brick ranch-style home just after three in the afternoon, having only made one pit stop for a quick lunch. The tall oak in the front yard still stretched up to the sky and the flower beds lining the front walk had been freshly mulched.

Her father had always taken great pride in the yard, no surprise, given his chosen career as a botanist. When she turned into the asphalt driveway and
