CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Drew slid lower down in the driver's seat. It had been a long time since he'd done any kind of surveillance and he'd forgotten how boring it could be. His arse had long since gone numb and the interior of the car reeked of last night's burger and chips.

From his vantage point across the street, he watched the front door of Jonathan Connor's house open and, a moment later, Misha McDermid step out. She paused, turning to speak to someone just out of sight in the doorway.

"Come on," Drew whispered as he fixed the camera lens on the young woman. She leaned into the shadow filled door, her hands going to... Drew's tenacity was rewarded when Jonathan appeared. Misha's fists were balled into the front of his gaping dressing gown.

Jonathan pushed her back against the door frame, crushing her small body between it and his bulk, as their kiss deepened. Drew snapped the images, working quickly to get as many as he could. His stomach churned uncomfortably as he watched them together. Connors pawed at the young woman as though she were some kind of toy.

When they pulled away, Misha was flushed. Giggling she stepped down from the door, her hand lingering in Connors until distance finally forced them to let go of one another. She disappeared down the street, leaving Jonathan in the doorway.

It would be so easy to go over there and... Drew cut off his own train of thought. Setting the camera down, he grabbed his phone and dialled Maz's number.

"Hello."

"I can prove a connection between the two of them," Drew said quietly. He slid lower into his seat as Jonathan closed his door.

"How?"

Drew was grateful that his DS didn't need prompting. When he'd decided to confide in the others on the team, Drew had worried they might not agree with his plans. But it seemed Harriet hadn't just made an impression on him; the others were equally as willing, if not eager, to hop on board.

"I caught her leaving his house this morning. I've got pictures of them cosying up to each other. It paints a pretty damning picture."

"It doesn't make Misha a liar though," Maz said.

"Not yet," Drew responded. "Has Jodie managed to find anything about her?”

"Actually, she called Olivia this morning and asked her to come in early. You should probably get back here, guv, so she can tell you herself what she's dug up."

Scanning the facade of the house, Drew couldn't shake the feeling of unease at the idea of leaving his post. Then again, Misha was gone so there really was no point in hanging around. He'd got what he came for. Sliding his seatbelt over his chest, Drew started the engine. "I can be there in thirty."
