The sun was brightly shining for the next two days, and when they began to their ascent into the village, Eurion was brightly shining, too. Carys, who thought it good to bring her seaweed a day or two early and store it in Enfys’ unused goat byre, allowed Eurion to pull the cart this time. She didn’t think it was a bad thing for him to lose a little of that energy. And although she saw Ma Yong Hwa in the distance, resplendent in a cream suit and his usual dark top hat as he walked along the cliffside, it was also unlikely that they would meet Aled today, when it was not market day.

Or so thought Carys. To her dismay, it was an unfounded certainty; a little over halfway to the village, she and Eurion met with not just Aled, but Miss Allen, who was clinging to his arm as she descended a sandy path by far too steep and sandy for her delicate, high heeled boots. If she had been in the mood to be pleased by such things, Carys would have been dryly amused to see Eurion’s shine dim a little at the sight of them.

As it was, she found herself irritated. Aled and his silent frown grated at her, as did Miss Allen’s pretty, frivolous shoes and the pretty, frivolous ankles they displayed. That made her, in turn, irritated with Eurion—without whom, arguably, she would not have been thus annoyed.

“Oh!” said Miss Allen, breathless with her exertions. “We were just coming to see you! Eurion, why are you pulling Carys’ cart? She doesn’t like it, you know.”

Aled promptly deposited Miss Allen beside Eurion in a scattering of sand, and without a trace of the frown that had at first crossed his brow, silently offered Carys the arm that had been previously occupied.

Carys took no notice of the arm, but she did walk beside him ahead of Eurion and Miss Allen. Eurion stared at them indignantly as they passed, which made Aled smile a little, but he kept pulling the cart without complaint, and Miss Allen had words enough for the two of them for all that Carys could hear. Her constant chatter in the background made it difficult for Carys to pay attention to what Aled was saying, and only served to accentuate her annoyance in the situation.

By the time they reached the village, Carys was very glad to bid the two goodbye under the very real pretext that she and Eurion were expected as guests themselves and could stay to entertain company in the meantime.

Miss Allen pouted and said significantly, “I’ll only be shopping at the milliner’s, anyway. There’s nothing else to do!”

Aled, more straightforward in his wishes, said to Carys, “Come and see me at the Post Office later, if you have time.”

Carys made no promises—neither, she noticed, did Eurion, though she had heard him laughing with Miss Allen earlier. Laughing without reserve, too.

There was no laughter in him once Miss Allen
