Maine has been blessed with generations of extraordinary people. Innovative natives, enterprising explorers, and courageous settlers helped make Maine such a special place.

Archeologists say that tribes that formed the Algonquin Nation roamed the coastline and woodlands of Maine for 10,000 years before European explorers and settlers arrived. The earliest European settlers were Pilgrims who came from England. The Scots-Irish and a number of Quakers, or Friends, from other colonies soon followed them. In the 1740s, Germans settled in Waldoboro and then the Irish moved to York, Lincoln, and Cumberland counties. French missionaries and traders controlled much of Maine’s territory until 1759, when England won control of the land. French Canadians came to work in Maine’s textile, shoe, and paper mills. Later, Finns, Russians, Poles, and Italians arrived. Swedish immigrants established New Sweden in northern Aroostook County in the 1870s.

P stands for Penobscots, and Passamaquoddies, the first people of Maine.

They hunted, fished, trapped game, and gave many mountains, rivers, and lakes their names.
