KAIA

“What is Co’sentyx like?” I asked, suddenly parched, thinking about Ty and this bond. An inferno ebbed and flowed inside of me like an ocean of heat whenever my thoughts turned to him. I wasn’t used to hot flashes. Could this be the mating bond?

“Vivid colors, clear skies, pristine lands,” he said, biting into more pineapple, the juice making his lips glisten. Though sexy to watch, he was going to make himself sick if he ate much more.

“It’s quiet,” he continued. “We live a simple life, sharing responsibilities to keep the clan safe and healthy.”

It sounded really nice, actually.

“Most of our strife comes from warfare between the clans. The Sun’ozi believe they should rule the lands, since they are what they call ‘pure’ land-dwellers. They are in constant battle with the Rex’ulti. The Rex’ulti wouldn’t stand by and let them mistreat their own people, and we support the Rex’ulti in every way.”

It seemed fighting existed anywhere that groups of beings gathered. Why was it so difficult for people to get along?

“Are you a warrior?” I asked.

“Would that impress you?”

I shrugged. “Not necessarily.”

“Good, because I’m not a very good warrior. I’d rather entertain than fight.”

“You’re naturally funny.”

“Funny looking,” he said, making a face.

“Ty,” I laughed. Even making a face, he was adorable. “You’re gorgeous. There is nothing funny looking about you.”

A slight pink color tinted his cheeks, and he found something on the couch cushion to fiddle with.

“You could make a lot of money with your face.”

He furrowed his brow. “What’s money?”

“Currency? We exchange it for goods and services. The more you have, the more luxuries you can buy. Anything from fine food to exotic getaways around our world.”

“Fascinating,” he said. “What if you don’t have this money?”

“Your life is extremely hard.” I sighed. “The system you have going in Co’sentyx sounds much better.”

“Maybe, but it doesn’t make any difference if you’re not there. I’m not going back without you, Kaia.”

“Ty, it’s not safe here,” I groaned. “If they find you, they’ll take you and keep you, probably experiment on you, or torture you for information. And you don’t want to spend your life hiding.”

He leveled his silvery gaze at me. “If that’s what it takes to be with you, I will.”

I couldn’t believe how completely serious he was. He reached out and put a hand over mine, my body coming alive at the simple touch.

“But you don’t even know me.”

“Oh, but I do. When we performed the bonding rite, I could feel you. The loneliness you carry in your heart and your hope of better things to come. I want to take away everything that hurts you and give you all the happiness in my soul. Even if I have to sacrifice mine.”

I looked up at him, my eyes filling with tears. Only one other person had ever made me feel like he would fight the world for me. And he was dead.

“Who are you?” I said, tears spilling down my cheeks.

“Your fated mate,” he whispered, as he gathered me in his arms.
