In one cell in the women’s section a woman had looked up from the blanketed form of her dead baby as they entered. Across the corridor a woman in another cell had lain apparently dead. She had opened her eyes as they looked and prison officials had said, “Oh she’s not dead but her child is,” pointing to another blanketed form. In the corridors prisoners had staggered by near collapse. Prisoners were supposed to be getting the equivalent of three bowls of rice a day and regular exercise but their gaunt, blanched faces didn’t show it.29
